Company’s founders saw writing on the wall – Boston Herald
John Goscha was a Babson College freshman brainstorming another business idea with classmates in the school’s E-Tower dorm for entrepreneurs when he had the light-bulb moment. The students were sticking large pieces of paper to the study room wall to hash out their ideas, and Goscha thought it would be less confining if they could just write directly on the entire wall.

America’s Best Young Entrepreneurs | Twenty-Five U.S. Entrepreneurs Ages 25 and Under
Three Babson undergrads, John Goscha, Jeff Avallon, and Morgen Newman, came up with the idea for IdeaPaint in college when they found themselves unable to afford whiteboards for their brainstorming sessions. The product is a paint that turns any wall into a dry-erase surface, at a lower cost than actually installing whiteboards. They tried three labs before finding one that could engineer the paint they wanted. IdeaPaint, which raised $5 million from Breakaway Ventures last fall, is marketing the product to designers and architects, and so far the paint has been used in more than 6,000 installations in offices, schools, and homes. The firm has a staff of 14 in Cambridge and four full-time contract chemists working in Ann Arbor, Mich., where the paint is manufactured. The company expects to break even early next year.

30 Under 30 | America’s Coolest Young Entreprenuers
A lot of companies are born out of brainstorming sessions. IdeaPaint, however, might be the first company that set out to improve them. As a freshman in Babson College's entrepreneurship program, founder John Goscha would often hang large pieces of paper on his dorm walls, creating a makeshift canvas where he and his classmates could sketch out their business ideas. The tedium of hanging paper got Goscha to thinking, "Wouldn't it be great if we could just paint the walls and write right on the them?"

America’s Most Promising Startups | The Writing is on Their Wall
Sometimes a product idea is as obvious as the wall right in front of you. In 2005, three Babson College undergrads were brainstorming on a whiteboard, but had to keep erasing proposals to make room for more. Then, recalls Jeff Avalon, one of them said, "Wouldn't it be great if we could have a dry erase board that just took up the entire wall?" Over the next three years, Avalon, John Goscha, and Morgan Newman collaborated with chemists to come up with a durable, smooth, and nonabsorbing paint that could turn a flat surface into an erasable board. They released IdeaPaint at the NeoCon home-furnishing trade show in 2008 with a 3,000-sq.-ft. display and won its Innovation and Gold Awards. Since then, the Cambridge (Mass.) startup has generated $2 million in revenue. The water-based paint, which now comes in nine colors, is made under contract by three paint manufacturers in the Midwest and distributed by MDC Wallcoverings of Elk Grove Village, Ill. The three founders, now all 25, financed their venture with money from angels at Babson until they secured $5 million from Breakaway Ventures of Boston. The trio are among the company's 14 employees, but they're no longer the bosses: Knowing their own limitations, they hired Phil Damiano, who had run two other startups, as chief executive in January.

IdeaPaint Transforms Traditional Classrooms Into Dynamic Learning Environments
BOSTON – January 29, 2009 — IdeaPaint, the manufacturer of innovative products that enable enlightened and creative thinking, is helping transform the learning experience of students from kindergarten through college. The company’s flagship product, IdeaPaint™, is a breakthrough, commercial-grade paint that cost-effectively turns any smooth surface into a high-performance dry-erase writing surface. Chosen recently by Target as the paint used in its Target Volunteers school library makeover program, IdeaPaint has been applied in inner city libraries across the country, creating dynamic learning environments for children in need. The product is gaining momentum in the education market with school districts, colleges and universities around the country selecting IdeaPaint—a low cost solution—to help create spaces within their schools that evoke creativity and foster teamwork.
IdeaPaint is a patented single-coat paint that is easy to apply and is the most cost-effective dry-erase surface on the market. It has been proven to outperform and outlast traditional whiteboards through independent laboratory testing. Educators have been particularly positive about IdeaPaint’s ability to efficiently transform classroom walls into a creative canvas that promotes greater collaboration—especially when designing a 360° learning environment or when team teaching is in effect.
"We are getting great feedback from customers who are excited to have found a dry-erase surface that is cost-effective, functional and very durable. But it is especially gratifying to hear how schools are benefiting from IdeaPaint," said John Goscha, IdeaPaint’s Founder. "Target teamed up with us in part because using IdeaPaint meant they did not need to rip out chalkboards to create new surfaces—eliminating environmental issues and high replacement costs. The Braintree, Mass. school system covered old, dark chalkboards with IdeaPaint and found that it brightened the classrooms and had a positive impact on children’s motivation to learn. Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business—which boasts 6 Nobel laureates—painted a faculty office and the professor was delighted to discover the ability to express his world of ideas in free form; above the desk, next to the door, all along the open wall."
The inspiration for IdeaPaint sprang from the education environment. Frustrated that their ideas wouldn’t fit onto traditional flip charts or whiteboards, an entrepreneurial team of Babson College students led by John Goscha, began to develop ideas for limitless brainstorming and creative thinking tools. Upon graduation, they spent a number of years researching market needs and working with one of the foremost independent labs in the country to formulate what today is known as IdeaPaint. They also contracted with an independent research facility to test the finished product against the competition for durability and functionality—which proved that IdeaPaint outperformed and outlasted dry-erase wall coverings and traditional whiteboards.
IdeaPaint Receives Two Best of NeoCon Awards and
a Grand Prize for Innovation at NeoCon 2008
IdeaPaint, a manufacturer of innovative products and services to enable enlightened and creative thinking, proudly announces it is the winner of two Best of NeoCon Awards including one Gold Award. At the design industry's largest showcase, IdeaPaint received the Best of NeoCon 2008 Innovation Award and the Best of NeoCon Gold Award for Wall Treatments. The Best of NeoCon Awards are presented by Contract Magazine. The company also was the Grand Prize Winner of the Buildings Magazine 2008 Product Innovations Awards for Unique Solutions.
The accolades for IdeaPaint are the culmination of the launch of the company's flagship product, IdeaPaint, a commercial grade paint that transforms any smooth surface into a seamless, high-performance dry-erase writing surface. This patented product, distributed through MDC Wallcoverings for the architectural wallcoverings market, is compatible with industry standard dry-erase products.
"We cannot possibly overstate our gratitude and excitement about winning these prestigious awards at the industry's largest event," said John Goscha, founder of IdeaPaint. "We're very thankful to be recognized by our peers as one of the most innovative products in the wallcoverings industry. We look forward to working with architects, interior designers and facility managers to bring IdeaPaint into their diverse commercial design and building projects."
IdeaPaint is sold to the architectural wallcoverings market through MDC Wallcoverings, a leading global source for contract wallcoverings, coatings and specialty wall products for new construction and major renovations.
